Building With & On Purpose
Service Notes from Trinity Emmanuel Presbyterian Church Roc, NY

Opening Scripture
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” – Luke 4:18-19
Message Overview
This Sunday, we were reminded that purpose is intentional—it’s not something we stumble into but something we walk in deliberately. Pastor emphasized that when God places a call on our lives, it comes with the expectation that we will build with purpose and on purpose.
The focus was on identifying our “Why Power”—that deep, unwavering reason for why we are called to build, serve, and act. Unlike willpower, which can waver, Why Power is rooted in divine purpose, and it drives us even when challenges arise.
Sermon Highlights
1️⃣ Understanding Why Power
Why Power is the spiritual force that keeps you committed to the vision God has placed in your heart.
It goes deeper than desire—it’s a calling that won’t let you walk away.
It’s what wakes you up at night and keeps you moving even when it’s uncomfortable.
"Have you ever experienced something that you just couldn’t let go of? That’s your Why Power calling you into action."
2️⃣ Historical Builders of Purpose
We reflected on the lives of impactful leaders who walked in their Why Power and changed history:
Madam C.J. Walker turned personal hardship into purpose, creating haircare products for Black women and empowering thousands to pursue financial independence.
Septima Poinsette Clark built citizenship schools that empowered Black Americans to read, write, and fight for their voting rights.
Biddy Mason transitioned from slavery to becoming a wealthy landowner and philanthropist, using her resources to build community and establish institutions that still stand today.
Stacey Abrams overcame political opposition by building Fair Fight Action, registering over 800,000 voters and shifting the political landscape.
Reflection Question: Which of these leaders resonates most with you, and how can their story inspire you to walk boldly in your own calling?
3️⃣ Building with God’s Strategy
Just like Nehemiah in the Bible, when you are given a vision, God will supply the resources—whether that’s people, finances, or favor.
But you must get into position, listen for strategy, and follow God's instructions.
When Nehemiah prayed for guidance, God not only opened doors but also placed key individuals in his path who could help him succeed.
Key Insight: “When God gives the vision, He supplies the provision. Your job is to move in obedience.”
4️⃣ Preparing for Resistance and Victory
Building comes with resistance, but it also comes with victory.
Success requires managing both failure and triumph with faith, wisdom, and consistency.
You will need to ask for God’s insight, wisdom, and strength to stay focused and effective in every season.
Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”
5️⃣ Practical Steps for Purpose-Driven Living
Here are key steps to keep you moving in your assignment:
Seek Insight from God
Ask, “What gifts, talents, or experiences have You placed in me, Lord, that meet a need?”
Pray for Strategy and Grace
God gives wisdom generously. Ask Him for insight, strength, and energy to execute the work well.
Stay Focused and Committed
Don't be distracted by every opportunity. Align your focus with what God is calling you to build.
Prepare for Your Next Season
Some seasons are for learning and preparation, while others are for action. Discern where you are and ask God for clarity.
Jesus – The Ultimate Example of Purpose in Motion
When Jesus read from the scroll in Isaiah, He wasn’t just reading words; He was declaring His purpose.
Jesus moved with:
Intention – He was strategic in His actions.
Divine Timing – He waited for the right moment to speak and act.
Clarity – He knew why He came and didn't stray from His assignment.
Key Takeaway: “Purpose requires intentional, strategic, and bold movement aligned with God's timing.”
Reflection Questions for the Week
What is your Why Power? What deep calling won’t let you walk away?
Are you building with purpose, or are you just going through the motions?
What distractions are pulling you from your God-given assignment?
Have you prayed for divine strategy to build what God has called you to create?
Who is in your circle, and are they helping or hindering your progress?
Are you preparing for your next season, even when it feels like nothing is moving?
How are you handling both failure and success in your journey?
Are you choosing daily actions that align with your purpose?
How is God shaping you during this season of preparation?
What do you need to surrender to God this week to fully embrace your calling?
Final Encouragement
Do you believe? Do you believe that God has a divine assignment specifically for you?
If doubt is lingering, be honest with God. Ask Him to help you close the gap in your faith.
Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”
You’re not called to walk aimlessly—you’re called to build, to restore, and to be an answer to someone else’s prayer.
Closing Prayer
"Father, help us to walk boldly in the purpose You have designed for us. Give us clarity, strategy, and the strength to overcome resistance. When we grow weary, remind us of our Why Power, the divine calling that will not let us quit. Help us to stay focused and faithful, building what will last for generations. Amen."
